The AED that is normally stored in Whyte’s Pub has been temporarily relocated to Centra. It can be accessed within normal business hours. The other AED located at the Church/Parish Hall can be accessed 24/7.
Well done to the residents of Kilbreck and Glasheen who recently added new trees to various points around their estates. I’ve spotted beech, maple, and birch so far and they will really add to the landscape, and habitats for birds and insects, as they grow over the years.
Congratulations are also due to the St. Patrick’s NS school community who raised €2,200 for the Irish Cancer Society on Daffodil Day by selling out of bunches within minutes, including extra blooms donated by local Elmgrove Farm. A wonderful way to support a worthy cause and brighten up our homes at the same time.
Star of the Sea AC member Andrew Coscoran has been busy recently with representing Ireland at the European Indoor Championships and winning an Outstanding Achievement Award at the annual Meath Sports Awards.
It’s May and that means one thing in these parts – delicious strawberries from Clarke’s and the Michelle McKiernan 5k from Star of the Sea AC. The event is virtual again this year and is open from the 19th to the 25th of May. As always they are fundraising for Balbriggan Cancer Care and this year they’re hoping to help club member Andrew Coscoran in his training efforts for the Tokyo Olympics. The entry fee is only €5, although they’d love you to indulge in some of their eye-catching tie-dye running gear or a quick donation to the Cancer Care or Andrew’s Training Fund too.
Delighted to hear Gormanston train station is being upgraded for passengers with limited mobility next year thanks to a lift being installed.
After Elmgrove and Soilse Candles hit the national headlines last month, this time it’s the turn of the village’s gardeners. Ciarán De Buitlear and his green-fingered family were filmed this month by the team from RTÉ’S popular “Nationwide” show talking about community gardening, social media, and kids who love growing. I look forward to seeing them on the telly some day soon.
There’s no sign of work starting yet on the footpath connecting the village to the Talbot Group campus, but the upgrade of the paths around Mountain View are most welcome for the many walkers and runners in the village.
Apparently the village is about to acquire a second cafe. Coco Bliss Coffee House is due to open at the end of May – serving takeaway barista coffee, baked treats, smoothies, and healthy snacks. Local coffee drinkers will be spoiled for choice with this plus Daily Bread, Centra, and Whyte’s all serving up the caffeine.
Another business in the village has been reviving recently. Whyte’s Pub (https://www.facebook.com/whytesinstamullen) has opened for takeaway snacks, pints, and cocktails on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. You can ring in your order to 01-8412612. It was great to see the village centre busy (but socially distant) last weekend with the launch of this service. Gibney’s of Gormanston (a.k.a. The Huntsman) are also dipping their toes into takeaway service. Their new G Burger service provides a wide selection of burgers with all the trimmings and those vital pints too.
