< Previous© October 2017 The Meath Coaster30When Is a Backup A Backup? With the increased threat of ransom-ware and hacks of systems I thought it timely to examine backups and explore exactly what is meant by this often misun-derstood word in the tech world. It is vital you understand, no matter what device we are talking about, what the different type of backups mean and how they can be used to recover from the many pitfalls which can befall any device.Factory Recovery BackupsIf you have ever purchased a laptop or desktop computer in the past the option to create recovery media was presented to you. In many cases I find that either this was never done or the original media has long disappeared into the some space or location we can’t remember. Factory Restore Backups(FRB) are vital to create. I cannot over emphasize this fact. If you have a serious issue with your pc it can mean the difference between dumping the pc and repairing it. This is even more true on windows 8 and Win-dows 10 machines where the Windows product license is no longer printed on a sticker on the machine but is embedded in the hard coded memory (bios) of the ma-chine. Incidentally if you own a windows 7 machine don’t be tempted to peel or scratch this sticker off and if it is wearing take a good quality photo of it and store it with your Factory recovery media.Caveats On Factory Recovery BackupsThere a few caveats with Factory Recov-ery backups that you should be aware of:#1 Never use the FRB without consult-ing a qualified technician. This is one of the most common mistakes I come across. FRB’s are the very last op-tion to be employed when you run into trouble on a computer not the first. Re-storing a computer to factory default in-stallation with an underlining problem can result in the machine being unusable. I see it most often being employed to attempt to fix a machine that has slowed to a crawl. In many cases this is caused by a hardware issue. A FBR will NOT correct a hardware error but it will in some cases paper over it for a period and in many cases the next fail of the system will be catastrophic.#2 Factory Recovery Backups can wipe your hard drive.I never do a factory recovery unless I am completely satisfied I have ALL of the users data secured. I simply will not take the chance of the recovery backing up the data on the hard drive (which may be faulty) and then restoring it. You must backup your system and data before you attempt to use this feature. Incidentally most qualified technicians won’t even work on your original drive when using these backups. We clone the drive and work off the cloned drive to ensure if any-thing goes wrong we can start over. I will continue on this topic in my next article.§ Oliver Reidy is a computer technician and has been in the industry since 1981.You can contact him via email at help.desk@reidyonline.com or at the telephone num-bers listed on this page. The students were busy from the outset. A two day orientation course for our new first years (some of whom are pictured here ) helped them to adjust to the significant challenges the move to secondary school brings. A big welcome to our many students from the East Meath area.their badges at an awards ceremony last week. Once again East Meath students are well represented in this group. The Student Council is at present reforming. Canvassing and voting are ongoing. Such initiatives build leadership capacity in our students, helping to form strong women who can do much to contribute to the so-ciety to which they belong. Finally, Mass to celebrate the new year was held last week. The whole school community gathered to prepare itself, in mind and spirit, for the year ahead. § Junior Science ClubSports Taster Day‘A’ hat trick in Junior Cert resultsHigh achieving Junior Cert students with Principal Miss Mc Donough.September has been busy for the whole school community. There have been sports taster days for 1st and 4th years , days which give the students a chance to check out the many sports activities available . All are welcome and indeed encouraged to take part in extra curricular sport. . First and second year students are packing out the science club, a club which is a breed-ing ground for budding young scientists. The junior cert results were one of the highlights of this September. Three stu-dents pictured here were awarded all A s in the exam and many other high achiev-ers (pictured here with Miss Mc Don-ough)were awarded six As or more. Well done to these students and indeed to every student who achieved her personal best. Our student leadership team of Captains, Coordinators and Senior Prefects received © October 2017 The Meath Coaster34Please mention The Meath Coaster when replying to advertisementsTHE VIEW FROM THE KITCHEN TABLE, By Geraldine HughesI pretend to hate grocery shopping but I mustn’t because I do it regularly, and even though I know I could order online I have never done it. I’m fortunate to be off during the week, so pretty much have the aisles to myself which suits me just fine since crowded shops bring me out in a rash. I shop (mostly) in one or both of the German giant supermarket chains. I should come clean here and say that I actually objected to one being built op-posite my mother’s house, and did a little keyboard warrior war dance over one pro-posed for a local site but, apart from pop-ping up like Mine-craft buildings, I quite like their style. My stance has done a complete U-turn on this but sure, isn’t that allowed? When the supermarket opposite my mother’s was completed it not only blended in well but also regenerated a sleepy village and providing a much needed centre point. My mother disagrees so my sisters and I shop there under cover, and then hide the bags in the boot. I also like they have unwittingly turned shopping into a competitive sport. I always say I’m not competitive but if I think I have a chance of winning, I am. Bear with me now until I get to that bit. The M.O of these super-markets is that you shop, you checkout, you chuck everything back into the Oasis Childcare Centre Mornington, Co. All in the name of flow and speed. Then I realised if I put 3 of their bags for life, one after the other in the trolley, they fill it exactly. I felt an idea coming on. Now I should say that packing at the checkout is against the rules, and I am a rules person but I just felt that I could prove that this could work. I should also say it’s not for the faint hearted, and wholly depends on the demeanour of the checkout person- My sister tried my win-ning formula and was loudly reminded of the ‘No packing at the checkout!’ rule. The shame!! I had my shopping on the counter. I laid out my bags, and avoided the eye of the shop assistant who could see what I was about to attempt but instead of telling me I couldn’t do it, decided to take me on in a silent battle of speed, agil-ity and nerve. The faster she scanned my items (she was really fast!) the faster I packed, miraculously even getting fruit and veg all in one bag. We were neck and neck as she scanned the last item, turned to look at the total and turned back to find me, debit card in the ma-chine, bags packed ready to go. She was quick– but so was I. With a slight nod, we mentally high fived each oth-er, and went about our day. Shopping as a sport? this I can live with. . §A Happy Halloween to all our children & their parents from all at Oasis Childcare CentreHOUSEHOLD SERVICESBG PAINTING & DECORATINGInterIor & exterIor25 YEARS EXPERIENCE REFERENCES AVAILABLEFREE CONSULTATIONS & ESTIMATESWALLPAPER ALSO AVAILABLEContact Brian 086 7308449Call Nicky - 041 9887128 087 7734344 A Local BusinessCosmic Cleanwww.cosmicclean.ieT&Cs & Minimum Charge appliesMAJOR DISCOUNTS for Multiple RoomsRug Collection & Delivery Service AvailableProfessional Carpet & Upholstery CleaningSPECIAL OFFER!Noel SavageElectrical Services20 Years Experience • Security LightingFuseboard Upgrades • Rewires, Extra Sockets • Lights, Fully Insured and RegisteredNo Job Too SmallBettystown, Co. The two are very intertwined. We make countless tiny decisions everyday, often with very little forethought. All of the decisions we make have an impact. Here’s a challenge for you to try: every time you go to make a decision (from what to have for breakfast to whether you should say yes to minding your neigh-bours dog for two weeks) stop and ask yourself: “is this in my best interest?” This can be very powerful. You may be wondering why you strug-gle to lose weight or get fitter. Often the answer lies with our mindless decision making. The thoughts of getting out for a walk in the cold or going to the gym may not seem appealing, but when we scan the choice with “is this in my best interest” we help focus our attention to the healthy choices! Likewise, if you’re eyeing up the packet of biscuits and considering skip-ping lunch to justify it, running “is this in my best interest” can help us to become more aware of how our behaviours are impacting on our goals. We may still de-cide to opt for the biscuits, but at least we are becoming more mindful of the conse-quences of our behaviours and not won-dering what’s going wrong!!And if you often find yourself making choices based primarily around other peo-ple’s needs and demands, this scan can re-ally help! Asking yourself if saying yes is a good decision for YOU can help to shift focus from “fixing and pleasing” others to “respecting” your own needs and bounda-ries. If you keep making decisions based on others and neglecting yourself there’s an increased risk of eventually feeling resentful and disrespected. The choice is yours. So give it a try! See how changing your thinking can impact on your feelings and behaviours.Get in touch for information on The Core Approach One to One Programme, see ad for contact details.Clarke’s Fresh FruitThomas Byrne TD met with Mary Clarke from Clarke's Fresh Fruit in Stamullen at the recent Ploughing Cham-pionships in County Offaly. § Tel: 087 7955509 E-mail: kellybairbre@hotmail.com www.facebook.com/theCOREapproach Website coming soon! 1 to 1 programmescombining nutrition, psychotherapy and fitness.Stamullen, Co. Drogheda Grammar School Leaving Cert results:Congratulations to all of our students who received their Leaving cert re-sults in August. It was a pleasure to share in their happiness and find out which university and third level institution they were progressing to next. For the staff it was satisfying to see their hard work and support come to fruition and see and improvement in the overall results once again this year.School Summit and Higher OptionsTo emphasise the importance of planning ahead and mapping out each student’s fu-ture our Transition Year and 5th year stu-dents attended both the school summit and RDS higher options conferences re-cently. Both events gave each student an opportunity to reflect on their career aims and map out their path to further study and success. Junior Cert results:The long wait came to an end on Wednes-day 13th September as Mr Baker handed out the Junior cert results. With a mixture of nervousness, joy and relief the enve-lopes were opened. Overall the results were a great reflection of this group’s efforts and hard work last year. Special mention must go to Rachel Berney who received 9 A’s!!American University ScholarshipsWe wish the best of luck to Alex Holden and Ryan Nolan (Class of 2017) who have both been offered scholarships to attend university in the United States.
