Stamullen Roundup – August 2021

By Grace Tierney

If, like me, you’re a fan of the Olympics you’ll be tuning in to the coverage and doing sums to work out the time difference to Tokyo – Japan is eight hours ahead in case you’re wondering. This time we have the perfect reason to what the athletics coverage as local runner, Andrew Coscoran is on the Irish team! A proud member of Star of the Sea AC he will be competing in the 1500m. The heats of the 1500m take place on 3rd of August between 1:00 and 4:30am Tuesday morning Irish time, with the semi-finals on the Thursday 5th between 11:00am and 1:45pm Irish time. I hope to hear the cheers around the village. If you’re curious about his journey to this point (he started running aged five!) check out the excellent post on the Star of the Sea AC’s facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/staroftheseaathleticclub.

We have two new TV stars in Stamullen – the De Buitlear boys (with a little help from their Dad, a moving force behind the busy Stamullen Gardening facebook group – https://www.facebook.com/groups/742704373256186) were featured on RTÉ “Nationwide” this week and their enthusiasm for gardening and all things green shone through. If you’re on twitter you’ll find them and their large follower group chatting about planting and living an eco life at @GardeningWell.

Two St. Pats Stamullen Gaelic players have had some county level success recently. Congrats to Emma White who was part of the Meath team to defeat Kerry 2-16 to 1-9, thus winning the National Football League Division 2 final and moving Meath into the first division for the next season. Emma has already brought the cup along to the club for all to see. Congrats also to Sean Emmanuel who played on the Meath minor football team to beat Offaly (1-7 to 1-6) and win the Leinster championship. The club has also provided three players to the Meath under 16 squad for the new season – Jamie Murphy, Conall O’Fuaruisge, and Sean Sullivan.

Local councillor Amanda Smith is now vice-chair of Ashbourne Municipal District of the County Council, well done and hopefully that will raise Stamullen’s profile at council level.

Well done to Whyte’s in the village who are now back serving food as well as drinks in their newly constructed outdoor dining area. Food will be served Thursday – Sunday 12-9p.m. and booking is strongly recommended – ring 01-8412612.

Did you know the Seamus Ennis Centre is back hosting some outdoors events again? In late July they even had Fr Dougal (a.k.a Ardal O’Hanlon) and friends in a Comedy Night in the Piper’s Garden. You can check listings for upcoming events at https://www.tseac.ie/. Sadly their lovely Cottage Cafe is now closed, but hopefully a new team will take on the challenge as it’s a great venue.

The parish office has re-opened and is available 9:30-12:30 on weekdays. You can contact secretary@sjparish.ie or ring 01-8412647.

** Please note that changes to public health Covid 19 restrictions may affect events/services. Check with organisers if you have concerns.
